Herbert “Herbie” Auerbach, 93, died peacefully in hospice in West Hills, CA on Sept 1, 2015 after a long and valiant battle against the forces of nature. An Army veteran of World War II, Sgt Auerbach was a member of the OSS-Detachment 101.
As a radioman/cryptographer behind Japanese enemy lines in Burma, his heroic actions during combat earned him a Bronze Star. He remained a patriot to his dying day.
After the war he became a manufacturers representative and put both sons through college while maintaining his beloved home in Van Nuys for over 53 years.
Herbert was a very compassionate animal lover who took care of the neighborhood stray cats and loved dogs of all kinds.
Herbert is survived by his wife of 67 years, Emma and his two sons, Edmond and Brian.
Memorial services will be held on Sept 13, with the burial immediately following. In lieu of flowers the family asks instead that donations be made to the Los Angeles SPCA in Herbert’s name.
